「お金」Is Japanese payment technology late?

Hello. I'm Kitsuneya, who runs a blog.

Today's theme is "How popular is cashless society in Japan?"

Japan is still a cash-basis country, but recently, the number of stores that accept credit cards and electronic money has increased. If you last came to Japan five or six years ago, it should have increased considerably. I think it's still far from Western countries.

I would like to write about it, including comparisons with countries other than Japan.

How different is the penetration rate between Japan and overseas?

It is said that the ratio of cashless payments in Japan is about 30% and does not exceed 30%. It is said to be 40% to 60% in other developed countries, and by country

South Korea 94.7%

Canada 62%

China 60%

Australia 59%

Singapore 57.6%

USA 47%

By the way, the ratio of cashless is lower in Germany than in Japan at 17.9%. Looking at this, I feel that the ratio of 30% or less in Japan is quite low.

Why is cashless society not spreading in Japan?

The reason for this is not as simple as "Japanese people are cash-based!" There are two main reasons, so I will explain each.

1.  The fee paid by the shop is high!

It's okay until you sign a contract with a credit company, but many business owners dare not pay credit because the fees for subsequent payments are high. It seems that there are many restaurants where it is difficult to make a profit. By the way, the commission on the store side may be as high as 7% in some cases. 7% of the amount paid is pretty ugly, isn't it?

2. Be prepared for a disaster.

Japan is an earthquake powerhouse. 25% of the earthquakes that occur all over the globe in a year, and once every four earthquakes are Japanese earthquakes. Many large earthquakes have occurred since March 11, 2011. And when such a thing happens, a "power outage" always occurs. I'm afraid that if you rely only on cashless, you will not be able to do anything in the event of a disaster. It's not just an earthquake. Even typhoons can cause power outages in Japan. There are many people who cannot step into complete cashless payments in the event of such a disaster.

Where can I pay cashless in Japan?

You can pay by credit card at the accommodation. However, I still don't know at old inns. I think it can be done without problems at hotels and new guest houses. Also, taxis can be paid by card. I think it is convenient to purchase a prepaid card temporarily on trains and buses. You should be able to purchase it at the station window for 500 yen. You can move as much as you charge, and if you have money in this card, you can shop at the convenience store.

More recently, vending machines have increased. The number of models that can be purchased with a credit card has increased. I want the penetration rate to increase further.

・Hotels and guest houses

・taxi

・convenience store

Most of these can be used with credit cards.

On the other hand, many ramen shops do not accept cards. It is essential to bring cash when you go to a ramen shop. Cash is required at Japanese ramen shops as they may be prepaid by ticket vending machines. Furthermore, you may not be able to use 5000 yen bills or 100 million yen bills, so if you have two or more 1000 yen bills per person, you should be able to eat ramen without any problems. Be careful!

・restaurant

・supermarket

・hospital

Credit cards and e-commerce payments may not be available at these facilities. Especially ramen shops and hospitals often do this, so it's a good idea to check in advance. Please note that many supermarkets only accept cash payments.

That's all for this article.

We recommend that you have a minimum amount of cash when you travel to Japan. There is a lot of cashless society in urban areas, but not in the countryside. If you have about 10,000 yen in cash, you can enjoy your trip in Japan with peace of mind. Oh, if you want to play flashy, you may have to pay around 30,000 yen lol

See you soon.
