「お金」Prices in Japan are rising!

 Good afternoon everybody.

I'm Inarimaru, the owner of this blog.

This time, I would like to introduce the "price" of things sold in Japan.

This article was written in February 2023. I apologize if things have changed since then.

In recent years, prices have started to rise gradually in Japan, and at McDonald's Japan, there have been two price revisions within a year, and compared to a year ago, almost all menus have been reduced by 10% of the price as of spring 2022. This resulted in a price increase of about 15%.

Based on that, I will introduce it.

1. Big Mac ¥450

The first is the Big Mac. As I explained above, the price has gone up in the last year. It was ¥390 until August 2022, but the price rose in September to ¥410. In addition, the price will increase in January 2023, and now the single item price is ¥ 450. However, from a global perspective, Japan is still cheap. It seems that most European countries are more expensive than Japan.

By the way, a set of M size mac potato and M size drink is ¥750.

Japanese potato M size is 135g. The M size drink is 325ml, which I think is smaller than the American size. Not only is the price of Japan cheap, but the quantity is small, which may be the reason why it is cheap compared to other countries.

2. Coca-Cola 500ml ¥180

Next up is Coca-Cola. It is a drink that is very popular all over the world and everyone knows it! Please think of this price as the price at vending machines and convenience stores. And it's priced. It was ¥150 when I was a student, so the price has risen by 20% in the last 10 years.

In Japan, 500ml PET bottle drinks are no longer the mainstream, and 700ml or 350ml bottles are becoming more common in supermarkets.

The price at the supermarket is about ¥120 for 700ml. 350ml is priced at around ¥70. what? Isn't the price cheaper than 700ml? Japanese supermarkets often sell products cheaper than the regular price.

By the way, you can buy a 500ml bottle of Coca-Cola for ¥108 at a 100 yen uniform shop in Japan. Most drink holders in Japan are compatible with 500ml PET bottles, so please refer to them when driving in Japan. A 700ml PET bottle doesn't fit in the holder!

3. gasoline

Gasoline prices vary by region in Japan. As of February 2023, it can be purchased at "1 liter = 153 to 176 yen".

In many cases, the fuel tank of a Japanese ordinary car is about 42 liters. If you live in an area where you can buy 1 liter for 160 yen and refuel until the tank is full, it will be 6720 yen.

I got my driver's license about 14 years ago. At that time, the price of gasoline in the area where I lived was 133 yen per liter. The price has risen by about 30 yen per liter, and if the tank is full, the price will rise by more than 1200 yen for one refueling. People who live in areas where cars are essential often refuel twice or three times a month, so this price increase is quite painful.

Four. iPhone14 Pro 128GB ¥149,800

The last is the price of the popular smartphone in Japan, iPhone 14 Pro. I must say that it is quite expensive. Same price as a laptop. In Japan, it is common to purchase in two to three year installments, but since the price rise, more and more people have turned away from the iPhone. The share of smartphones in Japan has always been the iPhone, but in the past few years, android has surpassed the share. This is partly due to improvements in android functions, but it seems that the main reason is that users are staying away from soaring prices.

In addition, it has been announced that about 10,000 items on the market will rise in price after April 2023, and it seems that the average price will be about 20% to 25% higher than the current price.

In addition, electric power companies have announced an increase in electricity rates, which is expected to increase by about 30% from June 2023. There is considerable damage to the household budget.

In Japan, salaries have not increased, and that is a problem. If this continues, full-scale stagflation will occur. If that happens, Japan may no longer be a "cheap and safe country." And I sincerely hope that is not the case.

That's all for this article.
