Hello everyone.
I'm Inarimaru, the owner of this blog.
This time, I would like to write about the "pet situation" in Japan. Mainly about dogs and cats.
What kind of pets are popular in Japan? Let's see!
1. What animal is popular in Japan?
Introducing animals that are popular as pets in Japan.
This ranking is for people who don't currently own pets. The data will be for 2020.
1st dog
2nd cat
3rd rabbit
4th hamster
5th fish/tropical fish
This is the order. Dogs and cats are the most popular. It was surprising that tropical fish ranked in the top 5, while birds such as parrots and reptiles did not.
2. How many animals are actually kept?
Only dogs and cats currently have data on the number of breeding in Japan. This data is from a 2021 survey.
In Japan today, dogs are the most popular pets. The number of registered dogs in Japan is about 3.97 million. Cats were the next most popular, but the actual number of pets was about 4.89 million. Surprisingly, the opposite result was obtained for 'animals I want to keep' and 'animals that are kept'. It also makes a big difference.
Until about five years ago, dogs were more popular and more popular than dogs, but around 2017, the ranking seems to have reversed. This seems to have been a shocking event for the Japanese pet industry. That's what I mean. This is because people who have dogs and people who have cats spend different amounts on pets.
3. How much do Japanese people spend on dogs and cats?
Here's how much money dog and cat owners spend. In the case of dogs, it seems that there is a difference depending on the size, so I will divide it into three and introduce them.
This amount will be the average amount you will use from the time you start keeping your pet to the time you bereave it.
Small dog: ¥2,532,347
Small dog: ¥2,173,910
Medium/large dog: ¥2,317,006
Next is the cat,
Cat ¥1,525,777
This is the result. Surprisingly, dogs classified as "ultra-small dogs" are the most expensive to keep.
By the way, the monthly average is
Dog ¥12,020
Cat is ¥7,525
As a result, people who have dogs are still spending money.
4. What is the average life expectancy of Japanese dogs and cats?
It is a world-famous story that Japanese people live long, but what is the average life expectancy of dogs and cats raised in Japan?
First of all, the average life expectancy of a dog is 14.65 years. Smaller dogs tend to have longer lifespans, while larger dogs tend to have shorter lifespans.
Then there is the average life expectancy of a cat. The cat is 15.66 years old. However, it was found that there is a difference of about 3 years, with "16.13 years old for cats kept indoors" and "13.57 years old for cats kept outdoors". After all, it seems that those who keep it indoors can live together for a long time.
I didn't know whether Japanese dogs and cats live long because there was no comparison data with other countries, but I think they live relatively long.
In recent years, in Japan, health insurance for pets, obligatory microchip implantation, measures against designated pathogens such as rabies vaccine, etc. efforts to do so are increasing.
I hope that there will be more initiatives to help pets and their owners live happily ever after.
That's all for this article.
There are still many things I want to write about, but I think it would be too long to write in detail, so I will cut it off here.
If there is a response, I will write an article about Japanese pets again.
By the way, the most popular dog in Japan in 2022 is
1st place toy poodle
2nd place Shiba Inu
3rd place Chihuahua
So the popular cat is
No. 1 American Shorthair
2nd place Scottish fold
3rd place Munchkin
That's the result.
What kind of pet would you like to live with? Please write in the comments.
