「電車」Read this when you want to go sightseeing in Tokyo!

Hello. This is Kitsuneya, who runs a blog.

Do you know the "train that goes around Tokyo" in Japan?

I think that if you can use this train well, it will be easier to move around Tokyo.

I hope this article will be useful if you are visiting Japan for sightseeing in Tokyo.

The train is "Yamanote Line"

There is no end station on this line. This is because the tracks are connected in a circle. I prepared a route map.

As you can see, all the stations are connected.

Also, since the train runs clockwise and counterclockwise, even if you pass the target station, you can get off at the next station and take the train that is in the opposite direction to return immediately.

By the way, this train arrives at the station once every 5 to 7 minutes. In other words, even if you get off at the wrong station, the next train will come if you wait 7 minutes. The feeling of one station is often quite short, so it is possible to walk next to one station.

Let me tell you about my experience.

I got off at Ueno station and walked to Akihabara station. I walked for 2 stations. It took less than 30 minutes. If you walk by the railroad tracks, you won't get lost, so if you like walking or biking, you may want to go around along the railroad tracks. It may be painful to walk, but I think you can go around in a day with a bicycle.

How long does it take to make one lap? How much does it cost?

The maximum distance between stations is about 7 minutes, and it takes about 70 minutes to go around. By the way, it takes about half a lap from Ueno to Shinjuku, and it takes about 35 minutes.

The price varies depending on the distance, but if you move to the next station, it will be 140 yen ($ 1.2 7/5/2022) and the maximum will be about 570 yen (about $ 4.3). This maximum is half a lap, isn't it? By the way, how much will it cost if you go around 280 yen (about $ 2)? Because I haven't moved to the station. However, the ticket of the station where you bought the ticket cannot be used at that station, so you will get off at the next station. Therefore, the minimum charge of 140 yen is once. To return to the original station, I bought another ticket and moved only one station, so one lap costs 280 yen.

Don't ride during this time!

Everyone, isn't the train in Tokyo already crowded? That's right! !!

It is often the case that there are as many people as stupid people cannot stand properly.

But if you're lucky enough to spend less time in the crowd, you can even sit in your seat. So here are some times when you should avoid getting on the train in Tokyo.

7:00 to 8:00

It gets crowded from around 6:30 on weekdays. It's hell time. People heading to work or school flood the car and can't even operate their smartphones. We recommend that you do not ride. The number of people will start to decrease after 9 o'clock, and you will be able to ride without problems after 10 o'clock.

From 18:00 to 20:00

This time is also crowded with students returning from school and people returning from work. Hell time where the morning situation is repeated Part 2. The number of people decreases after 21:00, but be careful in another sense because there are many drunk people who were drinking alcohol somewhere. Well, don't worry, there aren't many idiots that get entangled badly. In Japan, when a little quarrel occurs on the train, the news is published quite widely.

It's smarter to avoid these two times. It is recommended that you be in an area where you can enjoy breakfast, dinner and sightseeing on foot during this time.

Free pass is recommended!

If you want to explore Tokyo all day long, buy a free pass. The tourist attractions in the 23 wards of Tokyo are close to each other, but if you use public transportation one by one, the amount will be quite high. Make good use of your free pass! There are three types, so I will introduce them.

1, Tokyo 1-Day Ticket

Price: Adults ⇒ 1600 yen Children ⇒ 800 yen

It can be purchased at the counter of JR stations in Tokyo. It can also be purchased at a reserved seat ticket vending machine.

You can ride all-you-can-ride JR stations, subways, buses operated by Tokyo, and Toneri Liner in the 23 wards of Tokyo for one day. Recommended for those who want to go sightseeing all over Tokyo's 23 wards. It is also good to be able to reduce the time to charge IC cards and purchase tickets.

2, Yamanote Line unlimited ride pass

Price: Adults ⇒ 760 yen Children ⇒ 380 yen

It can be purchased at the counter of JR stations in Tokyo. It can also be purchased at a reserved seat ticket vending machine.

This ticket can be used freely all day long only at JR stations in the 23 wards of Tokyo. Subways and buses cannot be boarded with this ticket. The range of activity will be narrow, but it is quite cheap if you use only the Yamanote Line as a means of transportation.

3, Holiday outing pass

Price: Adults ⇒ 2720 yen Children ⇒ 1360 yen

It can be purchased at the ticket counters of JR stations within the range of this ticket. It can also be purchased at a reserved seat ticket vending machine. However, please note that there are designated dates such as Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, April 29th to May 5th, July 20th to August 31st, and December 29th to January 3rd, and the products will not be sold on other days.

This ticket is not limited to the 23 wards of Tokyo, but is a ticket that allows you to get on and off all day long in all sections of Tokyo, Naritanishi in the east, and Yokosuka in the west. Recommended for those who want to go out around Tokyo.

This image is also in Tokyo.

bonus

The expression "around Tokyo" is actually wrong ...

The "Yamanote Line" introduced this time does not actually travel all over Tokyo. It will be a train that goes around only the east side of Tokyo. West Tokyo and Tokyo on the west side of Shinjuku must not be on the Yamanote Line, and you cannot move with the 1st and 2nd free passes explained above. The expression "Tokyo's 23 wards" refers to the eastern area of Tokyo, which is what you imagine. It's the city you're imagining in your head right now.

West Tokyo is an area with a different atmosphere. There is a lot of nature and it has a different charm from the 23rd ward. However, Tokyo is still the "23rd ward", isn't it?
