「バレンタイン」What is the standard Valentine's gift in Japan?

Hello everyone. I'm Kitsuneya, who runs this blog.

Today I would like to introduce you to "Valentine's Day in Japan".

February 14th is just around the corner! It seems that Valentine's Day in Japan is a little different from other countries.

Please compare how different it is from your own country.

What is the current Valentine's Day in Japan?

Valentine's Day when I was a kid

・ Give chocolate from a woman to your favorite man and make a confession of love.

And the man who got it will give back on White Day.

I was thrilled when I was a student. "Can I get chocolate from a girl?"

What ? Have you ever received chocolate from a woman when I was a student? HAHAHA! !! Don't ask.

It is an event called. I am aware of that.

It's changed a little lately, not "from a woman"

・ Give chocolate to your favorite opposite sex and confess your love.

And the recipient will give back on White Day.

It has changed to the form. So many new couples will be born at this time.

If you are already a couple, the woman will give you chocolates to the man, and the man will give back the present on White Day on March 14th. That is the general one.

Do you have any doubts here?

"Do you give chocolates on Valentine's Day in Japan?"

Yes. that's right. In Japan, "Valentine's Day = Chocolate" day. It is common that it is a seal.

Then, I will explain why it became chocolate.

The beginning of Valentine's Day in Japan.

It is said that the event called Valentine's Day began to spread in Japan around 1955. There are various theories as to why it became chocolate, but around 1935, a Japanese confectionery shop called "Morozoff Confectionery" published the English newspaper "The Japan Advertiser" for foreigners and said, "Give chocolate to your Valentine. It is said that it started with the advertisement "Let's do it."

In other words, Japanese Valentine's chocolate is likely to have started for commercial purposes.

So, to be honest, few Japanese know the true meaning of Valentine's Day. Somehow, we are holding an event with the feeling that it is a foreign culture.

The culture of Japanese "Girichoco" is troublesome.

Girichoco means that women give chocolates to men who are close to each other because it's Valentine's Day. By the way, the woman has no special favor with the men. I'm looking forward to thanking you for White Day on March 14th.

You know? There is a troublesome reason. I have to give back on White Day on March 14th! It's annoying! I can't give back badly and it costs money! If you don't like it, you'll be given chocolate for the reason you want to give it back! Moreover, it is impossible to refuse, or it is said that there is no manners around you. It's annoying and it's one of the mysterious cultures that I want you to disappear as soon as possible.

"Friendly chocolate" has been increasing recently.

This is different from Girichoco, where women buy and exchange handmade chocolates and recommended commercial chocolates with their friends. It is called "Tomochoco" in Japanese. Many students are doing it. I feel that the number is increasing year by year. I had many friends who I did when I was a student. Unlike Girichoco, this is exchanged on the spot, so White Day is irrelevant.

Changing Japanese Valentine's Day.

On Valentine's Day in Japan these days, the number of people who buy chocolate for themselves, not to give to anyone, has increased considerably. This is because confectionery makers, chocolate makers, and even pastry chefs sell chocolates for a limited time during Valentine's Day! And many people enjoy it at home as a reward for themselves. Japanese people are vulnerable to the word "limited time". I know you want to buy it.

This is the end of this blog.

As Valentine's Day approaches, the number of special chocolate shops in Japanese commercial facilities will increase. "Ah, is it such a season?", It will be a season when it is difficult for a man to buy chocolate by himself. I will think.

I'm glad if you get somehow.

What does Valentine's Day look like in your country? Is it completely different from Japan? Or is it similar? If you have any impressions, please write them in the comments!

see you!
