Are Japanese cigarettes cheap?
The price of Japanese tobacco will increase from October 2021!
It has been decided that the tax rate on tobacco will be raised in Japan, and the price of tobacco will increase accordingly. Some brands cost only ¥ 10 (￠10) per box, but the average price is ¥ 30 (￠30). There seems to be some cigarettes whose price goes up by more than ¥ 100 ($ 1).
Many people think that "only ￠ 10 or $ 1 is good", but I started buying cigarettes about 8 years ago. My favorite cigarette was ￥400 ($ 4) per box. The next price is ¥ 620 ($ 6.2). It's more than 1.5 times more expensive in 8 years.
"Japan = Tobacco is cheap" may end.
The Japanese government has announced the reason for this tax increase. There are three main points.
・ I want to increase the number of new smokers and reduce the smoking rate.
・ Because tobacco is cheaper and easier to buy in Japan than in other countries.
・ I want to reduce the social loss caused by tobacco.
All of these comments are about health. Well, I'm wondering if I'd probably want to get some coverage and recovery from the recent virus turmoil. Tobacco and liquor are less likely to be bashed even if the tax is raised. Because it's a luxury item.
And the point is the second reason. I think it is important that Japan is also aware of the difference between the prices of tobacco overseas and the prices of its own country. It's like saying, "I'm going to raise the price to Western countries." At all, it won't be long before tobacco becomes a luxury item only for the rich.
It's short today, but that's it.
I also have a painful loss as a smoker. Maybe the tax will be raised around April next year.
