Good afternoon everybody!
I've been busy with work lately and couldn't update my blog. This article is a little short, but it's about Japanese gourmet.
One of the breads born in Japan. Introducing "curry bread".
picture? what? Neither "curry" nor "bread" was born in Japan! What? that's right. However, "curry bread", which is a combination of the two, was invented in Japan and was born in Japan.
Bread in Japan may seem like a short history, but there are many types of bread with unique arrangements, and "curry bread" is one of them.
It's one of my favorite breads. May be in Best3.
There is no fixed definition, but when you say "curry bread"
・ Curry wrapped in bread dough and fried in oil
Is the mainstream, and when Japanese people hear "curry bread", it is the bread in the photo above.
It's closer to a donut than bread, much like the Russian bread dish Piroshki. Recently, "curry bread", which is baked in an oven without being fried in oil, has appeared.
Inexpensive curry bread in plastic bags at convenience stores and supermarkets is also delicious.
However, I definitely want you to buy curry bread at a Japanese bakery. Because each bakery should have a different taste. The individuality of the store comes out. This is because a proper shop makes not only bread dough but also the curry inside. And above all, the freshly fried food is very delicious. The outside is crispy and the bread is soft, the taste of curry spreads in the mouth, and it's irresistible! !! !!
When did "curry bread" come from?
The origin of curry bread has been claimed several times, and the definitive origin is not yet known, but it is said that it was born around 1915 to 1935. What is said to be the origin is the claim of the three shops that I will explain from now on.
① Cattleya (Koto, Tokyo)
In 1927, a patent-like application was filed with the government, and the content was not curry at that time, but "wrapped in bread and raised like a katsuretsu." After that, he came up with the idea of combining curry with katsuretsu, which was popular among Western foods, and the theory that it became the current curry bread.
② Denmark Broad (Nerima, Tokyo)
A bakery that opened in 1934. The theory is that the founder of this shop sells "curry sandwiches" first, and then fried them in oil.
③ Nakamuraya (Shinjuku, Tokyo)
The theory is that an Indian independence activist who visited from India in 1916 taught Indian curry to the founder of Nakamuraya, and it was developed with that as a hint.
The content of each claim is different, but the timing is almost the same.
Is "curry bread" so popular?
In 2020, when we conducted a questionnaire survey asking "What is your favorite bread?", Curry bread was ranked 4th. By the way, the 5th place is a hamburger. It can be said that it is one of the most popular and common breads in Japan. Also, I was looking for a copyright-free image for this blog. I was surprised to see many images of curry bread even though I searched only for "bread". Everyone likes it.lol
Please try it at a bakery when you come to Japan. In addition to curry bread, you should be able to meet other breads unique to Japan.
This time it's short, but that's it.
I will update the blog soon.
See you.
