Hello. everyone.
Today's theme is "Salary when working in Japan".
Can I get rich if I come to Japan? Can you succeed overnight like the American dream? As you'll see after reading this article, this is unlikely to happen.
By the way, I don't work as a full-time employee, so it's an hourly wage system, and it costs about ¥ 1150 per hour. (September 2021 rate about $ 11)
Is it normal or a little expensive in the area where I live?
If you want to come to Japan or work in Japan, please refer to this article.
Since Japan is a developed country, is the salary good? I wonder if ...
The median annual income in 2021 is said to be about ¥ 4,370,000 (about $ 43,000). Dividing this by 12 months gives a monthly income of about ¥ 364,000. You may think that this is a lot, but this is the amount before taxes and insurance premiums are deducted. Not all of this amount remains in your possession. Probably, with this amount of money, what you actually have is about ¥ 3,300,000 (about $ 33,000) in one year.
If you ask this much, the salary in Japan is not low, but it is said that about 50% of the people live on salaries below this median. One of the causes is "increasing non-regular employees". There is also data that about 40% of Japanese workers are non-regular employees, and there is a difference of about ¥ 1,100,000 in annual income between regular employees and non-regular employees.
Do men and women have different salaries in Japan?
From here, I will explain how much the salary differs between men and women and age. This data is "average data of Japanese salary". First from men.
2019 survey
male
20s ¥ 2,590,000 ~ ¥ 2,900,000
30s ¥ 3,300,000 ~ ¥ 3,660,000
40s ¥ 3,970,000 ~ ¥ 4,330,000
50s ¥ 4,320,000 ~ ¥ 4,560,000
Employers often judge that people in their twenties are inexperienced, so their annual income tends to be difficult to increase. People in their thirties and beyond are often promoted, and many people raise their annual income. However, in Japanese companies, when you get a job title (managerial positions such as section chiefs and department managers), overtime pay is often not paid.
woman
20s ¥ 2,460,000 ~ ¥ 2,710,000
30s ¥ 2,830,000 ~ ¥ 2,890,000
40s ¥ 2,950,000 ~ ¥ 2,960,000
50s ¥ 2,820,000 ~ ¥ 2,890,000
Women tend to have lower annual incomes than men. In addition, many women in their 30s, who are often promoted by men, leave the workplace due to marriage, childbirth, or child-rearing. Some women return to work, but others work as non-regular employees at other companies.
This is just the "average salary of men and women in Japan", not absolutely this. In fact, some of my female friends and acquaintances have higher salaries than men. Of course, I think that there are many women who are going on to advance. Some of the companies I work for also work as female executives and managers.
What is the salary of foreigners working in Japan?
In 2020, the Government of Japan surveyed the salaries of foreigners working in Japan for the first time and announced the average amount.
Average monthly income of foreigners working in Japan ¥ 223,100
Do you say that I have doubts ... When asked if this is the case, I can't really say YES. After all, my Japanese friends have a much lower monthly income than this amount. Well, it depends on what you work for and your employment status. Perhaps this amount is the average of "foreigners who are regular employees working in Japan". I wonder if it is unlikely to be a part-time job.
If anyone wants to come to Japan for this amount of money, it is better to learn Japanese and have specialized skills. This will increase the chances of becoming a regular employee at a Japanese company. It is difficult for non-regular employees to exceed ¥ 200,000 in monthly income. I wonder if it would be this amount if I worked overtime every day and worked 13 hours a day.
By the way, in Japan, "There is no difference in salary between foreigners and Japanese." In other words, if the content of work is the same as that of Japanese, the salary must be the same. If salaries are set low "just because they are foreigners", employers will be subject to legal penalties. Salary is an essential part of living. Be sure to check the conditions before making an employment contract. It's too late after signing the contract.
Where do you see many foreigners working in Japan?
I think the number of foreign workers is really increasing in Japan. There are many non-Japanese regular employees in the company I work for, and many of my friends are foreigners working in other companies. These people are hired by companies as regular employees and work on a monthly salary system, but to be honest, there are not many such foreigners. They are foreigners who work as regular employees as a result of the combination of various factors such as high skills, high communication skills, and good luck.
The place where I see the most foreigners working is at "convenience stores" and then at "English conversation classes". And the overwhelming majority of people work as non-regular employees. Depending on the area, foreigners are more likely to check in convenience stores than Japanese.
I also had a part-time job at a convenience store for two years. When I was young, I was a student with almost no experience in other jobs, so I didn't find it difficult to work at a convenience store, but when I think about it now, it really doesn't pay. I don't think the amount of memorization and work is worth the salary.
I will write the future with the understanding that my personal opinion will be very rude.
If I have a chance to come to Japan and can work in Japan, I think it would be a waste to work at a convenience store. I think there are places where you can have a better experience than just money. It's relatively easy for non-regular employees to quit. It may be difficult to find the next one, but it's also good to find a job one after another and try various jobs. I think it would be good to work in a store with more characteristics even with the same customer service. I may think so because I have worked at a convenience store.
I wrote very rude to those who work at convenience stores and those who are proud of their work. I'm sorry.
