「労働」Are working hours in Japan long?

 Hello everyone.

I'm Kitsuneya, who writes a blog.

What I tell you about Japan today is about "working hours in Japan".

It is famous that Japan has long working hours and few holidays so that it is teased that "Japanese people love working and overtime." I will explain about that.

Is it true that Japan's working hours are among the best in the world?

According to the 2021 survey, the average annual working hours in Japan was 1713 hours. This is the 22nd longest working country by world standards. By the way, the first place is Mexico with 2255 hours. It's more than 500 hours more than in Japan. I did not know that.

By the way, how long is the 22nd? I think there are many people who have doubts, but the results of working hours in the United States, New Zealand, South Korea, Italy, Poland, etc. are longer than in Japan. It seems that working hours in Japan are not that high. However, this is a story when I saw it in a year.

Although the year surveyed is different from 2014, the result is that Japan has the longest working hours per day in the world. The average daily working time in Japan is 375 minutes. The time is 6 hours and 15 minutes. The world average including Japan is 259 minutes. The time is 4 hours and 19 minutes. There is a considerable difference.

How many holidays are there in Japan?

In Japan, Saturdays and Sundays are basically holidays. Other holidays set by the government will be closed. The number of national holidays in Japan is 16 days. Including summer vacation and year-end and New Year holidays, about 115 to 120 days are holidays. Do you guys think like this? "Isn't there a lot?" Yes, there are many, but not everyone has this much vacation. Some companies have Saturdays as work days, and many companies do not take holidays. Why? This is because there is no law that says, "Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays must be closed." In reality, there are many workers who have about 100 days of holidays a year, and there are also workers who have about 80 days a year.

Is there no vacation in Japan?

There is also a vacation in Japan. However, you can think that it is only a student. Students have a consecutive holiday of about one and a half months in the summer and about three weeks in the spring. However, in the Japanese working environment, there are no such long holidays. There are consecutive holidays of about one week during the year-end and New Year holidays and about one week in the summer, but in Japan they are called long holidays. Other than that, there are about 5 consecutive holidays in May. In most cases, it is difficult to use paid leave in Japan. As a result, the paid leave given to workers for 20 days a year cannot be used and often disappears. The government has also amended the law, but no improvement has been made on the corporate side. The working environment in Japan can be described as morbid. Many Japanese companies have lifestyle-related diseases.

Over the next few years, the government will likely further improve the working environment. I don't know if I can expect it, but I hope it will improve.

That's all for this article. How long do you work in the country you live in? Please let us know in the comments.
