「学校」Students do the cleaning at Japanese schools!

 Hello everyone.

This is a short article today as well.

The theme this time is "school cleaning".

Why is this theme? You might think that, but surprisingly there was a difference between Japan and other countries.

Students clean Japanese schools.

There is always "cleaning time" in Japanese elementary and junior high schools. In most schools, I think it's common to clean up for about 20 minutes after all the lessons are over. From high school, it seems that the number of cases where contractors clean the school is increasing.

At the school I attended, I divided the classes into about 6 groups and cleaned the places I was in charge of. Classrooms, corridors, courtyards, stairs and other places to clean changed in a week. And the cleaning time is twice a day. It was after the lunch break and after the class was over.

Sometimes I cleaned it seriously, but when I didn't have a teacher, I used to play around with it. You can imitate baseball with a cleaning tool, or hang out with friends in places where people don't come often. It's a good memory.

When did the students start cleaning?

Surprisingly, the history is old, and there was no school in the Edo period (around 1600), but there is a description that the students were already cleaning at a facility that gathers children and teaches study, such as a school, and a school was established in the Meiji period. It was the same since then.

Why do students clean the school?

School cleaning originally started with religious implications. A facility like a school in the Edo period is called "Terakoya". The teacher here is often a Buddhist monk. In Buddhism, there is cleaning of temples as part of the training, and it is said that this spread. As a result of this, it has become common for students to clean the school.

Parents say, "Don't let your kids clean the school!"

Recently, this "school cleaning" has become a hot topic. It's the opinion of the opposition.

・ Do not spend your child's time cleaning for 30 minutes a day.

・ Hire a cleaning company.

・ Use that time for studying.

etc. Many such opinions are raised. Especially, the people around 40 and 50 years old are the ones when the education in Japan was strict. I don't think I have good memories.

Personally, I think there are merits.

・ It becomes easier to become aware of "cleaning up".

・ Because it is done in groups, it is easy to get cooperative.

・ By knowing the difficulty of cleaning, you will not be messed up with garbage outside of school.

etc.

I also understand the opinions of parents of children. Understandable. But isn't it because of this culture that people from other countries say that the city of Japan today is a clean country when the facilities are clean? I want to say.

I'm a kid who didn't clean up seriously. But now that I'm an adult, my room doesn't get very dirty, and I don't walk down the street and throw trash around. Isn't it because I felt a little cultural accumulation when I was a kid? I think now. I think it is because of such experience that I feel that it is common sense to clean the space that everyone uses.

I hope this culture will continue even if the cleaning tools used at school are replaced by electrical appliances.

Well, this time it's short, but that's it.
